Mom fell in the shower last night. She didn't hurt herself, but she simply cannot get off the floor anymore, or on her knees at all. So she managed to rinse her hair, turn off the shower (from the floor), skooch out of the shower and into her bedroom before she could get to the phone to call me (two hours!). And there was no way I could lift her in any way, so we still had to call the fire department. That was amusing - 5 guys came trouping into the house to help her up. And after they got her up, they noticed Tilly (who is only slightly smaller than a bed pillow). "Damn, that's a big cat!"

Man, I am going to make damned sure I never get this bad.

ETA: I looked in Mom's shower while we were waiting for the fire department. It needs a bleach soak.

Some of those assisted living places ROCK! I want to live in one now. The only thing is most of them don't allow pets.

For the most part it's her knees - she can't get on them without being in real pain. She also has a bad case of arthritis.

To top it off, she is badly overweight and badly out of shape from never exercising unless she absolutely had too. She's in water exercise now, but it really isn't enough to counteract a lifetime of bad habits.

She really needs one of those buttons.

I'm glad she is ok though.

Glad she's OK!

I second the comment about one of those alert buttons. And some periodic housecleaning help too, given her infirmities.

If her shower is big enough, get one of those shower stools so she can sit in the shower while she gets clean. A hand rail or the like could also give her something to hang onto when she needs to move around or climb in and out (or get up off the stool or even the floor, depending on her arm and hand strength).

Beyond that, what the others have already said. One of those alert buttons and a phone in the bathroom will go a long way to making both of you feel more secure.

Got it, got it and we talked about the med-alert buttons. And I told her to put the phone in the bathroom when she showers.

I'm threatening to put a block & tackle in the bathroom.
